The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Sadako Ogata, will make a one-week trip through Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan beginning Thursday, her Tehran office told AFP.

She will visit Pakistan from September 14 to 17, and then go on to the western Afghan city of Herat. The following day she will cross the border into Iran before ending up her visit in Tehran, the UNHCR office said.

During her visit to Iran she will visit several refugee camps holding some of the roughly 1.4 million Afghan refugees living in the country. Iranian officials estimate that half of them are in Iran illegally.

More than 70,000 Afghan refugees have been sent home since April under a "voluntary repatriation program "being administered by the United Nations, officials said on Sunday – TEHRAN (AFP)
