The UN's top human rights official, Mary Robinson, will travel to the Middle East on Wednesday to review the human rights situation following weeks of unrest between Palestinians and Israelis, her office said on Monday.
The UN high commissioner for human rights will visit Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Egypt and Jordan during her weeklong visit, a press release said.
The Geneva-based UN Human Rights Commission called for Robinson to make the trip to look into alleged human rights violations by Israel at meeting in special session last month,.
The Israeli government has said it would not cooperate with such an inquiry.
Robinson said she would "explore ideas for instituting and pursuing a dialogue on human rights".
"I plan to convey to the parties the importance of developing a culture of human rights and tolerance, which I believe, is the key to a peaceful and stable future in the region," she said in a press release.
She added the parties should consider how to avoid exacerbation of the situation in the future through early warning and preventive measures.
