The UN's top human rights official Mary Robinson will meet Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat during a trip to the region to review the human rights situation after recent violence, her office confirmed Tuesday.
Robinson, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, leaves Wednesday and goes first to Israel before heading to the Palestinian Territories, Jordan and Egypt, spokesman Jose-Luis Diaz told reporters.
She is expected to meet King Abdullah of Jordan and President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, he added.
A special session of the UN Human Rights Commission, based in Geneva, voted last month to set up a commission of inquiry into alleged human rights violations by Israel during recent clashes across the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The meeting also called on Robinson, a former president of Ireland, to carry out an urgent visit to the region -- GENEVA (AFP)
