UN chief Kofi Annan's man in Lebanon, Rolf Knutsson, said Monday he had told Lebanese President Emile Lahoud that Beirut must impose its authority with troops and police on the troubled border with Israel.
"I reminded the president that I, in a previous meeting, have already called for additional Lebanese armed forces to be deployed in the south in order to enable the government of Lebanon to take full control of the area" in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions," Knutsson said.
Knutsson, personal representative in Lebanon of the United Nations secretary general, told reporters after what he described as a "good meeting" that Lahoud had not "made any undertaking to do anything specific." - BEIRUT (AFP)
