Iraq may attend the tripartite committee of the international committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) scheduled in Geneva for early July, for the first time after a two-year boycott, a UN official told KUNA Wednesday.
"Although Iraqi officials said recently they won’t attend the Geneva meeting, we’ve got reverberations they want to do something. Keep your eyes on Geneva," the official noted, adding that the ICRC has not been notified of anything yet.
The committee is comprised of the ICRC on one side, Iraq on the other and the rest of Kuwait and the coalition.
Iraq has boycotted its meetings since early 2000 to protest the presence there of US, British and French delegations who have no business with the detainees matter.
The official said the Iraqi delegation, led by foreign minister Naji Sabri may want to meet with UN secretary-general Kofi Annan in Vienna the following day, July 4 and 5, having done something positive in Geneva.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Yuli Vorontsov, the UN High-Level coordinator for the Kuwaiti detainees and stolen property, is scheduled to attend the Vienna meeting for the first time since the rounds of talks between the UN and Iraq began in February 2001.
They will surely discuss the return of UN inspectors to Iraq and the return of Kuwaiti archives stolen during the seven-month occupation. (Albawaba.com)
