James Baker, Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for the Sahara, arrived in Algiers Wednesday for talks with Algerian officials on new proposals to unlock the Sahara issue, according to Maghreb Arabe Presse

His visit to Algiers marks the second part of a tour in the Maghreb, which already took Baker to Morocco, where he was received by Moroccan King Mohammed VI.

Baker said he had delivered to Moroccan authorities "a new initiative allowing for a political settlement of the Sahara issue", the news agency said.

The UN special envoy is yet to visit Mauritania and the Tindouf camps for talks with Mauritanian officials and with the Polisario leadership. (Albawaba.com)
