The United Nations and aid agencies have warned that the thousands of children traveling along the migration route through Turkey and eastern Europe are at risk of freezing to death due to cold fronts in the next two weeks, Reuters reported.
Heavy snowfall and below-normal temperatures have been forecast for the eastern Balkan countries, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan.
"Many children on the move do not have adequate clothing or access to the right nutrition," said Christophe Boulierac, spokesman for UNICEF.
More than one million refugees reached the EU in 2015, and so far the influx has continued unabated despite the winter weather, with over 30,000 making the sea crossing to Greek islands in Jan. 2016 alone.
