The University of Dubai (UD), a prestigious university in the UAE established by Dubai Chamber, participated in the academic and research libraries meeting to explore options for forming a library consortium for accessing Ebsco database. Ebsco Information Services is the leading service provider of e-journal, e-book and e-journal package and print subscriptions, e-resource management tools, full-text and secondary databases, and related services for all types of libraries and research organizations.

Eleven universities attended the meeting which was held at Khalifa University Abu Dhabi. It was chaired by Dean Patricia Wand of Zayed University and hosted by Dr Jasim Jirjees from the National Cener for Documentation and Research (NCDR). The aim of the meeting was to build a knowledgeable society in the country and discuss ways to share the collections, combine catalogues, reduce cost of electronic resources and train staff working in the libraries and archives sections of these universities.

Dr M. Omar Hefni, President of UD said:  “It would be an extremely important breakthrough for the libraries of major universities in the UAE if such a consortium is formed. It will not only cut costs but give our students access to a broader knowledge base. In the presence of the Ebscohost research platform libraries would make available 300 databases through the integrated online search on a given topic thereby helping to open up a rich source of information for students. Once installed, this consortium will fulfill the research requirements of our students and faculty, most importantly at affordable prices.”

Universities which are part of this consortium include Abu Dhabi University, American University of Sharjah, Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research, Higher Colleges of Technology, Khalifa University, Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, National Library (Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage), Petroleum Institute, University of Dubai, American University of Ras Al Khaimah, Emirates College for Advanced Education, New York University of Abu Dhabi, University of Sharjah and United Arab Emirates University.
