The intelligence officer who helped three British girls join Daesh is a Syrian national, the Turkish foreign minister told AFP on Friday.

Turkey announced Thursday police had arrested a spy suspected of helping the UK teenagers cross the border into Syria to join extremists. Turkish officials said the intelligence agent worked for the US-led coalition against Daesh but didn't provide further details.

Friends 16 year-old Kadiza Sultana and 15-year-olds Shamima Begum and Amira Abase had boarded a plane from London to Istanbul on Feb. 17 en route to joining Daesh in Syria. They were last seen on video taking a bus to get to the border.
