US military planes attacked Taliban positions in airstrikes on the outskirts of the fallen northern Afghan city of Kunduz in the early hours of this morning, a Nato spokesman has confirmed.
The attack at about 9 am (4am UK time) marked the first US air strike to defend the city.
The airstrikes came as Afghan national forces launched a counter-attack against Taliban fighters who seized control of Kunduz on Monday, the government said.
