A "smart bomb" fired from a US warplane over Afghanistan missed its target and hit a civilian area near Kabul, possibly leading to casualties on the ground, CNN reported Saturday.
The Pentagon had no immediate comment on the report.
The report said a US Navy jet was aiming the precision-guided bomb at a helicopter at the Kabul airport and that it missed its target by about 1.6 kilometers (one mile). CNN said US officials were expressing regret over the accident.
CNN said it was not immediately clear what type of weapon was being used or why it missed its target.
The US resumed its attacks after the Muslims Friday holiday, with Taliban saying four civilians were killed in the early dawn attacks.
