US experts will arrive in Muscat on Saturday to help fight an out-of-control oil well fire whose towering flames and billowing smoke dominate the remote desert region, an Omani oil official said.

The flames are feeding off the uncapped well and large pools of crude collecting in earthen barriers, constructed after the well started spilling oil and other hydrocarbon materials Saturday, the official told the Gulf News.

Omani oil workers and a US team specializing in well leaks, which had arrived shortly after the spill began, have been unable to stop the blaze.

They are monitoring the fire until the arrival Saturday of a specialized US oil well firefighting team, the official said – Albawaba.com
