A US F-14 "Tomcat" fighter plane crashed in the Saudi desert during a training exercise on Wednesday, but its two crew ejected safely, the US navy said.

The pilot and a naval flight officer were recovered in good health and taken by helicopter to Taif air base in western Saudi Arabia, the Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet said in a statement.

It said the crash of the F-14 based on the carrier USS Eisenhower in the Red Sea was under investigation.

Apart from carrier-based planes in the Gulf, the US air force also uses bases in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to enforce a no-fly zone over southern Iraq - MANAMA (AFP)
