United States officials said Thursday that sanctions currently imposed on Iran are to be lifted gradually, as a potential nuclear deal is carried out, reported AFP. “Sanctions will be suspended in a phased manner upon verification that Iran has met specific commitments,” U.S. State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke told reporters.
Earlier the same day, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that Iran would not sign a nuclear deal “unless all sanctions are lifted on the same day,” according to Reuters.
Iran has faced harsh economic sanctions in past years, often causing hardship for civilians, due to its development of a potential nuclear program.
