The United States on Wednesday issued a worldwide alert for US nationals traveling and living abroad, warning of possible violent demonstrations amid continuing clashes in the Middle East.
"The events of the past week in Israel and the West Bank/Gaza have raised the possibility that there may be protests in support of Palestinians throughout the Gulf Region or elsewhere," the State Department said.
"The Department of State reminds all American citizens to remain vigilant with regard to their personal security and to exercise caution," it said in a brief statement.
"Avoid large crowds and gatherings, keep a low profile and vary routes and times of all required travel," the statement said.
The announcement came as hundreds of students stoned the US embassy in Damascus, breaking windows and burning Israeli flags.
