Saudi Arabia plans to submit a formal request to the US to purchase the AH-64D attack helicopter, including advanced Longbow radar, said Middle East Newsline (MENL) Wednesday.

Sources at the industry were quoted by the news service as saying that the kingdom "plans to submit such a request over the next few weeks.”

They said the Bush administration was expected to approve the Saudi request.

Last year, MENL said, the Pentagon briefed Saudi defense officials on the Apache Longbow. The sources said this was a signal that the Defense Department would not object to the Longbow sale to Riyad.

The Saudi request is part of a project by Riyad to upgrade its fleet of 12 AH-64A Apache helicopters to 'D' configuration. Riyad also plans to purchase 12 new Apache Longbow helicopters – Albawaba.com
