A 19-year-old Egyptian engineering student was released after the American authorities determined that he had no connection to the September 11 terror attacks in US.
Mohamed Omar, who was held in US for almost three months in Hudson County Jail in Kearny, is now back home in Egypt, said The Associated Press (AP).
He was deported for having violated the terms of his tourist visa by working illegally for a gas station, said the agency.
Omar was arrested Sept. 18 and cleared by federal authorities a week later.
His case had come to symbolize the frustration many Middle Eastern men, their families, and advocates felt over the government's detention policies following the terror attacks.
Omar was studying engineering at a university in Egypt, and was visiting US over the summer on a six-month tourist visa.
This release is the second of its type in three weeks when the Egyptian authorities were due to receive early on December an Egyptian airline mechanic who was arrested at his job site at Lambert St. Louis International Airport after he was released.
Word of Osama El Far's release came while supporters held a vigil at the Eagleton Courthouse in downtown St. Louis
El Far has been held for two months in a southern Missouri jail on federal charges for overstaying his student visa. He continues to deny any relationship with the terrorists who struck in New York and Washington DC, said reports – Albawaba.com
