The Democrats are looking for ways to prolong the recounts of US presidential votes in Florida, one of the Republican campaign attorneys, Theodore Olson, charged Wednesday.
"What we're seeing is, unfortunately, an increasingly desperate degree of statements, measures, litigations and efforts by the (Al) Gore campaign to prolong this and prolong this," he said in an interview with ABC television.
"Well, we have deadlines in this world ... We have to have an end to this process," said Olson, a lawyer for Republican George W. Bush's camp. "These votes were counted objectively, fairly and comprehensively twice already by people who did not have an interest in the outcome."
Olson said the Democrats want to "turn this over in certain selected counties, heavily Democratic counties, to Democratic officials who will then exercise their subjective judgment as to who voted for whom."
Eight days after the closest presidential election in US history and there is still no winner. The outcome awaits the results of recounts in Florida, where, according to preliminary counts, Bush won by a mere 300 votes.
The state of Florida carries 25 electoral votes, which would give either candidate more than the 270 needed to win the presidency -- WASHINGTON (AFP)
