The Head of the United States Senate intelligence committee, Bob Graham, met with Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo on Sunday to shore up support for reforms to the Palestinian security services and the US "war against terror."
"We did discuss the importance of rebuilding a series of institutions among the Palestinians," Graham told reporters after their meeting.
"There has been a history of relationships, which have included Egypt and US and the security services of the Palestinian Authority in their joint concern about reducing the level of violence and finding out and containing the sources of terrorism," he said, according to AFP.
The Florida Democrat recalled that Director of the CIA, George Tenet examined during his June visit to the region "the role that US could play in assisting and rebuilding an effective security apparatus for the Palestinians."
Graham confirmed he would soon be visiting Israel and the Palestinian territories, but could not say which Palestinian leaders he would meet with.
"We also talked about Iraq and President Mubarak, who again has a long experience in dealing with (Iraqi leader) Saddam Hussein,... gave us the benefit of his assessment of the current situation in Iraq," Graham said. (Albawaba.com)
