A US soldier serving with the NATO-led Stabilization Force (SFOR) in Bosnia was found dead with a gunshot wound at the weekend in the northeastern town of Brcko, an SFOR spokesman said Wednesday.

The soldier, whose body was found on Saturday, died of an apparent gunshot wound, Major Bob Tomson told AFP.

The investigation into his death is ongoing, Tomson added without elaborating or identifying the soldier.

The dead soldier was found in a house he was believed to be living in, the Bosnian Serb news agency SRNA reported.

More than 4,000 US soldiers serve with the 22,600-strong SFOR, charged with overseeing the implementation of the peace accords that ended Bosnia's 1992-95 war -- SARAJEVO (AFP)
