An American soldier was killed in an overnight attack in an ambush in central Baghdad, a U.S. military spokeswoman said Thursday.
According to the spokeswoman, a patrol from the First Armored Division was attacked in the al-Karradah neighborhood of Baghdad at 10:30 p.m. (local time) Wednesday.
The latest death brings to 199 the number of US combat fatalities in Iraq since President George W. Bush declared major fighting over on May 1, according to AFP. More than 2,200 American soldiers have also been wounded over the same period.
Meanwhile, some four hours later, an explosive device blew up close to a U.S. patrol in another part of the capital, injuring a soldier and an Iraqi translator, she added. (Albawaba.com)
