A road accident south of Tikrit killed a U.S. soldier and injured two, the military said Wednesday.

The accident took place Tuesday night some 10 kilometers south of Tikrit. The injured were being treated at a nearby medical facility and in stable condition, according to the military. No further details were released.

Also in Tikrit, US forces killed six Iraqis during fighting, the military said Wednesday. A 1st Infantry Division soldier was slightly wounded.

Elsewhere, U.S. tanks backed by helicopter gunships have pounded Shi'ite fighters holed up in a cemetery in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf, witnesses told Reuters. Hospital officials claimed at least four people were killed.

Some 30 persons were wounded in Wednesday's pre-dawn attack, the hospital officials added. (Albawaba.com)
