John Tobin, the US student accused of spying and granted parole after spending six months in a Russian jail on drugs charges, arrived Saturday in Moscow from where he will fly back to the United States.

Released the day before from a jail in central Russia, the 24-year-old arrived early morning in the Russian capital by overnight train from Voronezh, 475 kilometres (300 miles) south of Moscow, Interfax reported.

After waiting for most of the other passengers to disembark, Tobin left the platform escorted by four OMON interior ministry guards and got into a Chevrolet car with US diplomatic plates, ignoring reporters' questions.

His lawyer, Yulia Trakhacheva, who accompanied Tobin on his way from Voronezh to Moscow, said that the US postgraduate student was in good spirits and planned to return home shortly.

"There are no obstacles for John Tobin's departure from Russia," she said. "He is feeling fine."

The attorney would not say exactly when Tobin would leave for the United States, but Interfax reported that his departure would not be before Tuesday.

His legal team has said that the US postgraduate student may resume his studies in Russia after a holiday back home -- MOSCOW (AFP)
