The United States and Turkey will launch a “comprehensive” air campaign to flush Daesh fighters from a designated safe zone in northern Syria bordering Turkey, Reuters reported.
Talks between Washington and Ankara were completed Sunday, and regional allies including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Jordan may also take part in the operation, Foreign Minister Mevlet Cavusoglu told Reuters in an interview Monday.
“The technical talks have been concluded, yesterday, and soon we will start this operation, comprehensive operations, against Daesh,” he said.
The United States and Turkey plan to provide air cover for designated moderate rebels in Syria in a bid to flush Daesh militants from 80 km of border territory, Reuters reported.
Diplomats believe that cutting off Daesh’s access to Turkey is key to stemming the flow of foreign fighters and supplies into Syria.
US jets are already conducting airstrikes from Turkish bases in advance of the campaign, Reuters reported.
