The United States delegation in Paris is unable to confirm that a deal has been reached between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, a senior US official said.

"The parties are having intense discussions bilaterally and trilaterally.

But we're not laying any claim at this point to an agreement," the official said.

"Some discussions are continuing at the hour, the parties are looking at ways to calm the violence and get back on track with the peace process," the official added.

Meanwhile, French President Jacques Chirac said that the Israeli-Palestinian talks in Paris had been an important step in restoring calm in the Palestinian territories -- PARIS (AFP)
