USD 10 billion worth of reconstruction projects in Lebanon to impact demand for carpets and floor coverings

DOMOTEX Middle East 2009 focus on addressing emerging requirements of Lebanon's growing market

DOMOTEX Middle East 2009, the only dedicated carpets and floor coverings exhibition in the MENA region, has announced that it is targeting Lebanon as a major market for carpets and floor coverings and a catalyst for the growing regional wholesale market in view of a massive reconstruction drive being implemented in the country, which according to the Beirut Chamber of Commerce is estimated to be worth USD 10 billion. DOMOTEX Middle East 2009 will be held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from May 17 to 19, featuring an expanded segment dedicated to emerging trends and best practices in carpets and floor covering designs for hotels and office developments.

DOMOTEX Middle East noted that construction and real estate activities in Lebanon have expanded and achieved record levels in 2008, even continuing to consolidate despite the ongoing economic crisis. According to figures from the Directorate of Real Estate, total property sales went up by 21.8 per cent in 2008 reaching its highest yearly value of 83,655 operations, while property sales to foreigners likewise reached a landmark peak of 1,946 transactions in 2008; this reveals a revitalised interest in property development that has subsequently pushed demand for basic building materials such as carpets and floor coverings.

Angela Schaschen, Managing Director, Deutsche Messe Dubai Branch said: "Lebanon has a fiercely competitive and robust property market as shown by its overall performance in 2008, which was even more remarkable considering the challenges that the country went through the past few years. In light of the solid gains it has achieved, Lebanon will clearly play a key role in consolidating the market for carpets and floor coverings, opening opportunities for various regional wholesale markets and pushing demand as a result of the surge in property developments. DOMOTEX Middle East intends to capitalise on Lebanon's huge market potential by helping address specific requirements, particularly carpets and floor coverings for hotels and office developments."

DOMOTEX Middle East 2009 will feature two special segments – Creative Flooring and Designers Corner – that will showcase materials, products, techniques and trends in carpet and flooring designs for the hospitality and office sectors. Creative Flooring will gather professionals from the UK who will demonstrate the latest hotel and office floor laying skills, while the Designers Corner will exhibit the latest designs in flooring to interior designers and architects.

DOMOTEX Middle East has likewise established a key partnership with the Association for Professional Interior Designers (APID) to collaborate in key areas of the exhibition, including the inaugural Flooring Seminar, which will facilitate discussions with APID members about the role of flooring in interior design.

DOMOTEX Middle East 2009 will showcase a complete line of handmade and machine-made carpets; textile and resilient floor coverings; parquet and wooden flooring; laminates; sports arena flooring; fibres, yarns and textiles; cleaning and application technologies; ceramic tiles; and natural stone and marble floorings. The exhibition and trade fair attracts key industry players such as wholesalers and retailers of floor coverings, decision makers in the contracting business, planners, architects, interior designers, construction companies, project planners, floor fitters and other skilled workers from the sector.
