Vindemia Art, Antiques and Collectibles Gallery for the first time will bring together four emerging Indian artists for an exhibition entitled, ‘Painting a Thread’ at Aspen Café, Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates.  The exhibition will run from 12 April- May 23, 2010 from 11.00 am- 9.00 pm

The unique exhibition where art and fashion communicate by threading the bridges between art on a painter’s canvas and art on a fashion designer’s fabric will feature artists Manisha Gawde, Gunjan Arora, Alka Raghuvashi and Sridhar Iyer. All four artists will interpret the theme ‘Painting a thread’ in their own way.

“The ‘Painting a Thread’ exhibition is exactly the kind of creative collaboration that perfectly complements the artistic vibe of Aspen Café. We are very excited to continue to host Vindemia’s artistic finds and their exciting creations, and we are sure our guests will be inspired by these imaginative works of art,” said Holger Schroth, General Manager, Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates.

Artist Manisha is a trans-national who is not hidebound by various ‘isms’ and has the courage of conviction to develop her own pedagogy to give a form to her expression. Through her paintings, Manisha weaves the threads of human bonds and finds her connection with the supernatural. She uses the thread-like formations as a metaphor to express these non-obvious unions between people of various races and cultures.

Gunjan has been practicing thread art, the art form that has been his unique signature style, for the past three years. He has had two solo exhibitions and several group shows to his credit. This special art form has been displayed in various galleries in New York, Paris and New Delhi. The deliberate textures on the canvas are echoed in the heavy layers of haute couture creations. He explores the genre of couture within the idiom of textile, creating pieces that are ostensibly garments to be worn as works of art.

Dr. Alka Raghuvanshi is India’s first trained art curator, having trained at the Goldsmith College in London and the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford. Having participated in several international shows, Alka focuses her explorations in this show on textiles using hand-carved and hand-printed wooden blocks. These find an amazing balance of colour and form on the hand-woven eco- friendly textiles that she chooses.

The November born artist, Shridhar Iyer has been a recipient of major state and national awards in India. Shridhar’s work can be found in major private collections in India and abroad. In this series, that Shridhar calls ‘Jatra’ he further unfurls his earlier explorations into terrains of the ancient and the unknown. A fusion of the ‘Yin and Yang’, explores the mysteries of the left and the right hemisphere of the brain of the male and the female.

Despite working independently, all four artists have immense synergy in their works. It is a seamless interplay where each picks up from where the first left off. The show brings together the abstract paintings of the artists and the textile creations where their symbiosis and dialogue is one of continuity and innovation.
