The family and friends of Keith Broomfield, the first American to die fighting Daesh, have gathered in his honor for a wake in Massachusetts this Tuesday, reports Associated Press.
The 36-year-old is believed to have fought and died alongside Kurdish forces fighting Daesh in Syria.
Despite having no military training, Broomfield joined the Kurdish forces on February 24th.
He died in battle near the Syrian village of Kobani along the Turkish borders, Kurdish officials have stated.
Broomfield's obituary says "his heart was for the protection of the innocence of Kurdish women and children." His funeral will be conducted later today.
According to Arutz Sheva, about 100 US nationals have joined Daesh fighters in Iraq or Syria, while other Americans are fighting against the jihadist group.
