Wataniya Telecom, Kuwait’s Red Carpet Company, today announced that its customers will soon access one of the world’s most advanced, broadband networks through the completion of the deployment phase and successful trial period of Nokia’s HSDPA solution. The provision of this service was to follow closely after the launch of wireless connectivity all across Kuwait using the W-Net card. This will enable high-speed audio and video streaming and in the future allow the usage of sophisticated applications over the Wataniya network.

“We had made a commitment to our customers last year to deliver the latest technologies in the global market and now we are the first operator in the Middle East and Africa region to offer this revolutionary solution,” said Harri Koponen, GM & CEO, Wataniya Telecom. “HSDPA is the gateway to ‘Beyond 3G’ and with the Nokia solution in place we have been able to consistently roll out services of the highest caliber to our customers, keeping in line with our Red Carpet policy. Wataniya Telecom takes a careful approach when it comes to adopting network technologies, striving to provide customers with the best quality services that are most suited to their requirements.

“Nokia is strongly committed to the Middle East and Africa markets, and is pleased to play a central role in the opening of the first HSDPA network in the region,” said Dr. Walid Moneimne, Senior Vice President, Middle East and Africa region, Networks, Nokia. “We look forward to continuing our cooperation with Wataniya in bringing more attractive services to their customers.”

Approximately two months after W-Net was launched on the EDGE network, Wataniya followed swiftly with a sizable upgrade for wireless broadband Internet access. This solution enables customers to obtain video and audio solutions at speeds of up to 2 Megabits per second.

There are various operators in Europe and Asia-Pacific who are currently testing the technology, and some who have plans to deploy it in the very near future. Cingular, the GSM operator in the United States, launched the technology at the end of last year. This puts Wataniya Telecom up with the leading market players, not only in the Middle East, but around the world.

Launched in December 1999, Wataniya Telecom is positioned today the leading provider of mobile services in Kuwait and has been a driving force in increasing the mobile communications market penetration to over 90% percent of the population.

With operations in Algeria, Tunisia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Maldives, Wataniya is actively expanding its presence within the region as well in Asia, serving over 6.3 million customers, in countries counted over 92 millions citizens in total.

The Company provides a wide range of leading EDGE wireless voice and data services delivered with high quality and designed to meet customer’s needs and requirements.
