Two people were killed and a third person seriously injured when strong winds brought a tree crashing down onto their car in western England, a police spokesman said Monday.

"Two people were declared dead at the scene. The driver was taken to hospital with head and spinal injuries and is in a critical condition," the spokesman said.

The accident happened at Richards Castle, in Shropshire, on Sunday evening while the region was being lashed by gales.

Britain, already suffering from some of the worst flooding in decades, was bracing Monday for more torrential rain and strong winds from storm fronts which also spread to northern France -- LONDON (AFP)
