At least 36 people were killed in fighting Thursday in Abidjan between supporters of

Alassane Ouattara's Rally of Republicans (RDR) and Laurent Gbagbo's Ivorian Popular Front (FPI), backed by security forces, witnesses told AFP.

Witnesses said they saw 14 corpses in the northern Abobo surburb, confirming an earlier report by the National Islamic Council.

Two were killed when gendarmes fired on a mosque, a witness said.

Other witnesses saw 16 people killed in the FPI stronghold of Yopougon.

An AFP journalist saw six bodies in the Cocody area, not far from Ouattara's house, the scene of earlier fighting -- ABIDJAN (AFP)
