An ‘International Meeting on the Promotion of Local Music Heritage in the Age of Globalization’ is set to take place in Amman on September 17th, reported the Amman based, Jordan Times.
The meeting seeks to preserve traditional music and instruments in an age of technology and globalization, said the daily.
According to meeting organizers, the event will provide a forum for experts from around the world to discuss the most pressing issues facing traditional music in the new millennium.
"We aim at introducing national musical `dishes' from all over the world, to keep them on the surface next to the modern `Burger' music of our age," said Kifah Fakhouri, director of the Nour Al Hussein Foundation/National Music Conservatory (NMC).
He added that more than 105 participants between performing musicians and music experts from 36 different countries are expected to take part.
Supported by Queen Nour, the official opening ceremony will take place on Monday, Sept. 18 at Amman's City Hall in Ras Al Ein, and will feature classical music performances by several international soloists accompanied by the NMC orchestra.
The opening ceremony will also include a performance by the Jordanian ‘Mahabish’ band, who participated in the Hanover International Expo 2000.
According to the Jordan Times, the event will include several musical performances by accomplished musicians from all over the world, displaying a colorful array of traditional styles and musical accents ranging from jazz to classical music, to the magic of the east with a concert by Syrian singer Sabah Fakhri.
The meeting will also feature several lectures and seminars conducted by speakers from local and international music institutes, including the Vienna-based International Music Center, the Ford Foundation, the International Music Council, and others.
Those events will take place during the meeting's main sessions at City Hall throughout the days of the meeting, which will continue until Sept. 21. Furthermore, classes and workshops on several classical and traditional instruments will be conducted at NMC headquarters in Jabal Amman.
The music performances will be held at several venues including the Palace of Culture in Al Hussein Sports City, Dunes Club and the Roman Amphitheatre in downtown Amman – Albawaba.com.
