Security and military sources have said that a suicide car bomber has killed 12 soldiers and wounded six others in an attack on a military command center in southern Yemen's Abyan province.

AFP quoted the security source as saying that the commander of the 111th Brigade was seriously wounded in the blast.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack which claimed the lives of 12 people.

Yemen has seen fierce fighting between groups affiliated to Al-Qaeda and the military. Only last month, two militants and one pro-government militiaman were killed in a gun battle.

Yemen’s militias hail from its tribal areas and fight alongside the army. Their support was crucial in driving out Al-Qaeda militants from the major cities of Abyan province after a bloody one year battle.
