An Anti-Pollution Unit belonging to the Yemeni General Authority for Marine Affairs succeeded in controlling the oil leak from the French supertanker Limburg, which caught fire on October 6 near the al-Shaher coast of Hadhramout.
General director of the Authority’s Aden branch, Mohammad Abdullah Mubarak told the official Yemen News Agency SABA by phone, from the site itself, that the anti-pollution unit consisted of a service boat equipped with the most up-to-date techniques and anti-contamination means which reached the explosion area in record time. He added that as of the early morning hours, it helped in controlling the oil leak, SABA said Tuesday.
Mubarak further conveyed that the fire destroyed only one oil tank amongst 19 tanks in the ship, which was carrying 350,000 barrels of crude oil. He added that the firemen put out the fire and that there is only smoke rising up.
In addition, Mubarak confirmed that the situation is under control and that the anti-contamination team would conduct a survey throughout the marine area to closely evaluate the environmental damages, which resulted from the incident, SABA reported. (Albawaba.com)
