Yemen: Two die during protest

A policeman and a protestor died in clashes on Sunday between Yemeni security forces and thousands of demonstrators calling for greater rights and benefits, witnesses said. Four other protestors were wounded in the rally held in the sourthern port city of Aden, witnesses told AFP. According to them, police used water cannons and live ammunition to disperse the crowd.

 

According to Deutsche Presse- Agentur dpa, authorities said organizers had got permission to hold the protest at the city's main stadium, but not in any open public location.

 

Last August, thousands of protestors in the capital Sanaa called for the Yemeni government to resign because of falling living standards and rising food prices in one of the world's poorest states.
