The Yemeni national who hijacked a plane on an internal flight from Sanaa to Taaz last week may face the death penalty if proven guilty by the court judges, reported the BBC.online Tuesday.

The trial of Ali Sattar, accused of hijacking the plane on which the US ambassador to Yemen was travelling, began Tuesday, said the news service.

He was extradited from Djibouti where he was arrested after the hijack ended peacefully.

The hijacker ordered the pilot to diver the plane's destination to Iraq, but the pilot, instead, flew to Djibouti.

A number of Yemeni officials, mostly security officers at Sanaa airport, are reported to have been detained for questioning over the incident -- Albawaba.com
