In a turnaround of the decades-old pattern of Somalis crossing seas to seek refuge in Yemen, Yemenis are now escaping to Somalia, AFP reported Wednesday.
Yemenis arrived in Somalia on boats Wednesday, crossing dangerous waters in the Gulf of Aden for 12 hours and landing semi-autonomous regions of Somaliland and Puntland.
The Yemenis came from the Houthi-occupied city of Taiz before they left by sea. The UNHCR said the first batch of 32 Yemenis arrived on Saturday in Somaliland.
Yemen still hosts about 238,000 Somali refugees, according to the UNHCR.
