ALBAWABA - Zohran Mamdani, an American politician who has served since 2021 as a member of the New York State Assembly from the 36th district, representing the Queens neighborhood of Astoria, is a major competitor in the New York City mayoral elections.
Zohran Kwame Mamdani was born on Oct. 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda, the only child of postcolonialism academic Mahmood Mamdani and filmmaker Mira Nair. He moved to New York City when he was 7 years old.
If he wins the elections, the 34-year-old politician would become the first-ever Muslim Mayor of New York City.
People in New York City are heading to the polls to elect their new mayor. According to Al Jazeera, opinion polls showed that Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani gained more votes compared with independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
On the other hand, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that he will cut federal funding for NYC if Mamdani wins, and called on his supporters to vote for Andrew Cuomo.
