ALBAWABA - A photo showing two female Chinese athletes hugging has caused a debate in the country.
Circulating the photo was also banned by the famous Chinese website, Weibo, without the covering of their race numbers.
Wu Yanni was caught on camera hugging Lin Yuwei after the Women's 100m hurdles final at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, eastern China.
However, the photo caused wide debate in China leading to a ban on sharing it without covering the race numbers of the athletes. But some wondered why the Chinese athletes' race numbers led to this chaos.
According to Chinese media, the athletes' race numbers inadvertently formed a reference to the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989.
Lin earned a gold medal in the race with a time of 12.74 seconds.
The Guardian reported that a picture was captured of the two Chinese athletes in profile showing Lin’s lane number, 6, next to Wu’s lane number, 4 and "6/4" is a familiar reference to the Tiananmen Square massacre in the early hours of June 4, 1989.
