ALBAWABA - Unconfirmed reports circulated on social media claiming that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directly threatened Syrian President Bashar Assad.
An alleged breaking news circulated on many platforms including X (formerly Twitter) reading "Benjamin Netanyahu confirms that the decision to assassinate Bashar Assad has been taken starting today."
This allegation came shortly following news that an Israeli drone attacked a villa belonging to the Syrian Fourth Armoured Division, led by Bashar Assad's brother Maher. Many claimed that the attack "killed" Maher Assad allegedly saying that connection with the military officer and commander was lost after the strike.
Some people also circulated a photo of an obituary of Maher Assad and allegedly said it was shared by official sources and claimed it was an official announcement regarding the fate of the Syrian commander.
However, the Syrian Observatory For Human Rights (SOHR) said citing official sources that no information was made about any human casualties in the attack and confirmed that Maher Assad was outside Damascus when the drone hit the villa.
Did Netanyahu directly threaten Bashar Assad?
Regarding the allegation that Netanyahu's threats to assassinate Bashar Assad, no official Israeli source reported the news so it is likely a fake one.
Sawab website, a platform to detect fake news and correct it, confirmed in an X post that what has been trending about Netanyahu and Assad is baseless and no official Israeli website has reported such news.
"This statement was not issued by Netanyahu, as it was not published in any official source affiliated with the occupation," Sawab revealed.
