ALBAWABA - A 2015 video of Syria's new Minister of Justice Shadi Al-Waisi reportedly overseeing the execution of two women, charged with "corruption and prostitution" has resurfaced online sparking anger among human and women's rights activists.
According to an investigation made by the fact-checking platform Verify-sy, results showcased a "high degree of match" to Shadi Al-Waisi despite the clip's degrading quality due to compression.
Comments from social media users swarmed posts on Musk's X (formerly known as Twitter) demanding immediate action from Syrian authorities including his dismissal.
"He should be tried immediately."
"These guys are extremists once they get a hold on power their true nature will be revealed."
On the contrary, some users defended the actions in reference to Sharia law while others condemned the execution, due to it contradicting the teachings of Islam.
Did Syria's new Minister of Justice oversee a woman's execution?
A new senior administrator in Syria issued an official statement about the matter in question and said, "The video in question documents the enforcement of the law at a specific time and location, with procedures carried out in accordance with the laws in effect at that period and as part of a procedural agreement."
The statement adds, "However, we would like to point out that this process reflects a stage we have moved beyond, in light of the current legal and procedural transformations, which makes it inappropriate to generalize it or use it to describe the current stage, given the differing circumstances and references."
The investigation by Verify-sy concluded that it couldn't confirm or deny the accusations made against Syria's new Minister of Justice Shadi Al-Waisi.
