ALBAWABA - Prominent lawyer and human rights activist Nasrin Sotoudeh was arrested by Iranian authorities, Sotoudeh's husband Reza Khandan announced Monday.

Sotoudeh was held by Iranian authorities after she participated in the funeral of Armita Garawand, who died after being attacked by hijab police in a metro station in Iran.

The funeral of Armita Garawand, 16, who died on Oct. 28, was held last Saturday and was attended by activist Nasrin Sotoudeh.

Khandan told AFP: "My wife was arrested during the funeral of Armita Garawand along with others."

He added that his wife was "violently" attacked while being arrested by the police. It is worth mentioning that according to local media, Sotoudeh was arrested in 2018 after defending a woman jailed after protesting the compulsory hijab rule in Iran.

Armita Garawand was beaten up inside a metro station in Iran and entered Tehran’s Fajr Hospital on October 1 with a coma. The Iranian teenager then was announced brain dead.

The story of Armita Garawand was depicted as very similar to Iranian activist Mahsa Amini who was beaten up in Tehran, entered a coma then died on sept. 16, 2022.

Mahsa Amini's death triggered massive protests not only inside Iran but also worldwide with people calling for the improvement of women's rights inside Iran and the abolishment of morality police which target women who are not obeying the mandonatory headscarf rule.
