ALBAWABA - On Monday evening, the Israeli army announced a "limited ground operation" in Southern Lebanon. Many American and Western media outlets reported the news, however, The New York Times' coverage caused outrage.

The Israeli army reportedly said that the "ground operation" in Southern Lebanon aims at the return of Israeli settlers to the north after about a year of leaving the area shortly following the Gaza war.

After the Israeli harsh attacks in Gaza, Hezbollah, the Lebanese movement, announced targeting Israel in a support move to Hamas, which launched the Al-Aqsa Flood operation on Oct. 7, 2023.

At present, Israel is planning the return of settlers by targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. In addition, after the Israeli announcement of a ground invasion in Southern Lebanon, the United States announced sending more troops to help any threat against Tel Aviv.

The New York Times, an American newspaper launched in 1851, posted about the Israeli incursions led by the elite 98th division in cooperation with the commando formation, the paratroopers, and the armor of the 7th Brigade.

The New York Times posted on Sept. 30 a news article about the incursion under the headline "Israel Sends Troops into Southern Lebanon". It further added a highlight: "Israel’s military said its forces had begun crossing over the Lebanon border to target Hezbollah infrastructure in villages close to the Israel-Lebanon border."

The American newspaper was faced with huge criticism and denouncement from activists who said that Israel's so-called "limited ground operation" should be referred to as an "invasion" and they further accused it of violating Lebanon's sovereignty.

Some took it online accused the newspaper of double standards, adjusted the headline and compared The New York Times headline about Israel and Southern Lebanon with an old headline about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Assal Rad, an activist and a PhD in Modern Middle East History, posted both headlines and compared the difference in the tone used in both articles published by the American newspaper.
