Newborn scandal: Turkey arrests dozens, strips hospitals licenses for child trafficking

ALBAWABA - Children trafficking case has caused shock and panic across Turkey after a 'newborn gang' consisting of 47 suspects was held by Turkish authorities and legal measures are on the way.

Turkish media reported on Sunday evening that since March 2023, CİMER notified the Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate about the horrifying incidents in Turkish hospitals with crimes including child trafficking. 

A report was first shared by the Financial Crimes Department on May 21, 2023, then a probe was launched by the Büyükçekmece Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.

The "newborn gang" was led by doctor suspect Fırat Sarı and it was directed and managed by doctor suspect İlker Gönen. In addition, 112 Emergency Call Center ambulance driver Gıyasettin Mert Özdemir. 

According to the investigation, about 90 percent of newborn babies who were left under the supervision of a paediatrician or a nurse, died and the private hospital, Medilife Health Services Hospital, was suspended with links to the case.

Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigation Prosecutor YE of the Büyükçekmece Chief Public Prosecutor's Office revealed that four suspects whose procedures were completed on October 14 were released.

Meanwhile, he said eight others, including two lawyers, were referred to the Büyükçekmece Courthouse. The Criminal Court of Peace on Duty ruled that five of the eight suspects be arrested and three be placed under judicial control.

The indictment revealed that 10 newborn babies who died were listed as "victims". Meanwhile, 19 hospitals and health companies were highlighted for being "financially responsible".

In the indictment, it was requested that suspects Fırat Sarı and İlker Gönen get a total of 177 years and 6 months to 582 years and 9 months in prison for 10 counts of "committing intentional homicide through negligence", "aggravated fraud", "establishing an organization in order to commit a crime" and 11 counts of "forgery of official documents".

On the other hand, the indictment included the request for a prison sentence of between 10 and 437 years and 6 months for 18 other suspects, including doctors, nurses and health workers, on charges of "committing deliberate murder through negligence".
