ALBAWABA - Syria recently witnessed a horrifying incident when a child called Mohammed Qais Haidar was kidnapped in front of his school in the city of Latakia.

According to Erem News, local reports revealed that Qais' father is an academic physician working abroad, who just recently returned to Syria.

Syria's Ministry of Interior announced launching an investigation into the issue at hand. The ministry outlined in a statement that the "Latakia governorate is closely monitoring the kidnapping of Mohammed Qais Haidar in front of Jamal Dawoud School on Wednesday."

The Governor of Latakia, Mohammed Ahmad Othman, also shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) stating that he's closely monitoring the kidnapping and praying that the child returns to his family safe and sound.

He added, "The security authorities are exerting tireless efforts to reach the perpetrators and apprehend them to bring them to justice."

Othamn accused criminal gangs of kidnapping the child, adding that they are committing crimes "as a desperate reaction to the recent security successes achieved by the internal security leadership in consolidating security and stability in the province."

He concluded the statement with a reaffirmation that they "will never allow that phase to be repeated."

In response to the kidnapping, angry locals took to the streets of Latakia to protest the incident as videos flooding social media captured a man holding a picture of Mohammed, while calling for help from Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
