ALBAWABA - Mixed reactions emerged on social media following a report by the local Iranian news outlet Jame Jam newspaper, which is affiliated with Iran's state broadcaster, that singer Amirhossein Maghsoudloo, commonly known as Amir Tataloo was sentenced to death.
The Iranian newspaper was the first to report that popular singer Maghsoudloo, or Tataloo, was sentenced to death after being convicted of blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad, according to Iran International.
In addition, The Guardian reported citing the reformist newspaper Etemad which said on Sunday that Tataloo, 37, was sentenced to death on blasphemy charges. The report read: “The case was reopened, and this time the defendant was sentenced to death for insulting the prophet."
Was Iranian singer Tataloo sentenced to death for blasphemy?
Iran International reported on Monday citing Iran's Judiciary which denied earlier reports claiming that singer Tataloo was sentenced to death for blasphemy.
The Judiciary's media office in Iran dismissed the alleged report and confirmed that no final verdict for Tataloo was made or decided till this moment.
"He has recently become eligible for leniency under legal provisions. Leniency provisions, or legal reprieves, are measures outlined in criminal law to assist convicts in line with the restorative justice approach," the Judiciary said in a statement.
Earlier, The Guardian reported that pop star Tataloo had been living in Istanbul, Turkey since 2018 but Turkish police took him and handed him over to Iranian authorities in December 2023.
