ALBAWABA - The International Criminal Court issued in March 2023 arrest warrants against two individuals in the context of the situation in Ukraine; President Vladimir Putin and Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, the Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights.
According to the ICC, Putin is "allegedly responsible for the war crime of unlawful deportation of population (children) and that of unlawful transfer of population (children) from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation."
Will Putin be arrested if he goes to Mexico?
The Ukrainian embassy in Mexico called on the Mexican government on Wednesday to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if he attends the inauguration of President Claudia Sheinbaum.
In a statement sent to the Mexican government, the embassy wrote: "We are confident that the Mexican government will respect the international arrest warrant issued for Putin and hand him over to the UN judicial body in The Hague."
The inauguration ceremony of Mexico’s first female president Claudia Sheinbaum is expected to take place in October and there's a possibility that Putin will be participating in it.
It is worth noting that Mexico is one of the countries that signed the Rome Statute, the international treaty that established the International Criminal Court.
