ALBAWABA - An Egyptian woman sparked controversy after throwing a flammable substance on herself and setting herself ablaze to get more views online.

Following the widespread circulation of a video showing a woman setting herself on fire during a live broadcast, the Egyptian Ministry of Interior clarified, revealing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Giza Security Directorate identified the woman, saying that she is a housewife residing in the Abu El Numrus police district and has a criminal record.

A security source reported on Sunday evening that the injured woman was transferred to the hospital for treatment after suffering burns in various locations.

During questioning, the woman admitted to pouring a flammable substance on herself to elicit sympathy from followers due to her poor mental state.

Meanwhile, security forces tracked down an account that had reposted the video, identified the person responsible for promoting it, and arrested her. It was discovered that the accused resides in Cairo Governorate. Security forces also seized a mobile phone from her possession containing the original video.

The second defendant admitted to posting the video on her personal page to generate financial profits and increase views, without attempting to save the injured woman.
