Dr Paul Bain is a fully trained and qualified Child and Adolescent Consultant Psychiatrist registered both in the fields of child and adolescent as well as adult psychiatry. Dr Bain has gathered ample experience in the field of psychiatry through various work experiences and training in the field of psychiatry within different European countries and the U.S.A. and has also accumulated several years experience as a Consultant within the NHS. He insists on openness to different therapeutic frameworks while fully accommodating evidence based practice. Dr Bain contributed to the development and harmonisation of the discipline within the European Union Medical Specialists Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry between 2003 and 2006. He follows the highest modern standards of clinical practice.
Dr Bain believes that psychiatric care should be based on hard evidence to ensure efficacy and safety. It should be humane, ethical and holistic. The young person and their family’s experience should be as pleasant as realistically possible, when receiving support from mental health professionals. This involves developing a friendly atmosphere where all can feel understood and appreciated.
Dr Bain has formed a person centred approach to the psychiatric care of the adolescent where the young person’s views and wishes are constantly sought, valued and empowered. He fully appreciates the need for the young person to rapidly reintegrate life back in the community as well as their family environment (when this is appropriate). It is essential that the vulnerable life narratives of these young people are disrupted as little as possible. Following his lead, the multi-disciplinary team offers a comprehensive treatment package to the young person and collaborates towards supporting him/her on therapeutic home leave, as soon as this is clinically safe. When the young person accesses leave, the resources within the hospital are transformed into assertive outreach support in a very responsive manner adapting in real time to the young person’s clinical needs. It is core to Dr Bain’s care that the young person’s motivation and engagement are constantly monitored and developed, as he believes that these components form very powerful factors towards recovery and are so often overseen.
Dr Bain has many years experience of inpatient care management both in the public and private sector, and has also developed a thriving Central London private practice where he treats the full range of psychiatric disorders. He has also worked for the Court by providing expert opinions and assessments.
He is committed to leading Oakview Hospital through its development to becoming a four-ward specialist adolescent mental health facility and a leading hospital in its field.
