ALBAWABA – Apple just held its highly anticipated WWDC24 event, showcasing the upcoming iOS 18 with a slew of customization features akin to Android and a new AI integration with OpenAI’s models.

Apple kicked its iOS 18 presentation with casual updates ranging from color-changeable home screen icons, new iMessage features and a fully redesigned Photos app before the conversation later being switched to “Apple Intelligence,” the California based company’s take on the generative AI growing market.

CEO Tim Cook said “Our unique approach combines generative AI with a user’s personal context to deliver truly helpful intelligence. And it can access that information in a completely private and secure way to help users do the things that matter most to them,” as he announces the new features coming to M1 chip powered devices.

The revamped Control Center now features multiple pages for different controls and can be customized with a new API available for developers to create new controls for their apps and smart devices, as well as a new option to switch and change the camera and flashlight shortcuts on the Lock Screen. Photos App receives its “biggest-ever redesign” which focuses on decluttering the iPhone’s gallery using machine learning, by filtering away screenshots and grouping content into collections like different trips and events, as well as the ability to filter media based on who appears in it from people to pets, similar to Google Photos. (Apple)

Apple finally listened to demands for supporting RCS messaging in iMessage replacing the outdated SMS protocol, which allows for higher quality images and longer text messages, coming after big demand from users, a taunting marketing campaign from Android and EU regulations pressing for it, text formatting is also now supported. Apple Intelligence integration allows for generation of custom animations and images while texting or through a new dedicated app, and “Genmojis” which are custom emojis designed on the fly. Voice Memos now also offers transcribes, available for calls as well. (Apple)

Describing it as a “personal intelligence system” that would empower the iPhone, iPad and Mac with generative AI features like email writing and image generation processed locally, according to SVP Craig Federighi, as well as the highly expected OpenAI’s partnership bringing ChatGPT to Siri.
